I have been a teacher by choice for the last 25 years. Along with teaching I have also been a trainer and have conducted numerous training assignments with leading government and private sector organisations. During my professional career, I also had an opportunity to work with the Ministry of Tourism, State of Eritrea (North East Africa) as Trainer and Consultant.
While undertaking my professional journey as a teacher and administrator, I have accorded significant emphasis on building my competence in the domain of entrepreneurship at prestigious institutions namely: CIIE - Indian Institute of Management (Ahmedabad); Groningen University, and the University of Twente, The Netherlands. To augment my teaching abilities, I have attended competence building programmes namely: New Directions Programme by the Trinity College Dublin; Master Teacher Programme by ISB Hyderabad, Academic Leadership Programme by IIT Delhi, Research Methods by IIM (Kozhikode), etc.
I started my career in academics as a Lecturer at Regional Institute of Management & Administration, Chandigarh in 1998. Before joining Thapar, I was Professor and Campus Director at Satyug Darshan Technical Campus, Faridabad for one year and was Professor and Director at Chandigarh Group of Colleges, Gharuan, Mohali (now Chandigarh University) from Jan 2010 to June 2012. I was Deputy Director and Professor of Management at Gian Jyoti Institute of Management & Technology, Mohali, where I worked from Aug 1999 to Dec 2009.
I firmly believe that my objective as a faculty is to add significant value to the personal as well as professional lives of my students and transform them into scholarly practitioners. According to me the role of a teacher is that of a facilitator, who brings out the learning from within the student through interaction, activities, questioning, and discussions rather than just loading them with conceptual constructs. I encourage my students to read beyond the textbooks and engage with articles, YouTube videos, and journal articles to have holistic learning so that the teaching leads to transformative learning for the students. I operationalize my teaching philosophy in the classroom by integrating teaching, and research. I use a blend of teaching practices: lecture, discussions, problem-solving case studies, exercises and providing examples from the contemporary socio-economic scenario. I have recently started using journal articles and simulations for teaching in the classroom.
My teaching goal is that student should leave the class wiser than what he/she was before entering it. I want to ensure that education should contribute to the attainment of Desired Graduate Attributes. My ultimate test for my teaching effectiveness is when my alumni come back and share with me that what he/she learned in my class is helping him/her in the corporate world.
Based on my teaching-learning experiences, I published books titled "Rural Marketing" (2007) and "Management: Concept, Practice and Cases" (2010) with McGraw-Hill and my book on Effective Mentoring was published by Ane Books (2017). I have also edited three books on the theme of India
